May - August 2007:

James Whitman, Canada

James Whitman's work moves between narrative, free association and performance. In his primary practice of drawing you find complex plays with different frame conventions, genres and styles. Within unambiguous representational settings Whitman creates grotesque scenes that fall somewhere between the familiar pictorial elements of everyday life and their graphic disassociations. Symbols and figures are retrofitted, reworked and deformed. Through a process of ornamental overload they become unlikely and weird.

Whitman (born in 1976) today lives and works in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a member of the drawing collaborative The Lions and acts occasionally as a curator.
